Physics Safety Contract

Physics Safety Contract

Physics is a hands-on laboratory class. To ensure safety in the Physics classroom, we have assembled a list of rules that must be followed at all times. These rules are listed below. Please read the list carefully and sign the contract affirming that you have read, understand and are willing to abide by these rules. This contract must be signed by both the parent and the student before the student will be allowed to perform experiments.

  1. Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the lab.
  2. Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. If you do not understand any portion of the procedure, ask the instructor before proceeding.
  3. No student may work in the lab without the instructor present.
  4. When entering the classroom, do not touch any equipment until you are instructed to do so.
  5. No food or drink in the lab.
  6. Perform only those experiments authorized by the instructor.
  7. Observe good housekeeping practices. Work areas should be free of clutter.
  8. Know the locations and operating procedures for all safety equipment.
  9. Be alert and proceed with caution at all times. Notify the instructor immediately of any unsafe conditions you observe.
  10. Experiments must be personally monitored at all times. Do not wander around the room or interfere with the experiments of other students.
  11. Students are never permitted in the storage room unless given specific permission by their instructor.
  12. If there is a fire drill during a lab, turn off any equipment and leave the building immediately.
  13. Carry knives and other sharp instruments with the tips pointing down and away from your body. Always cut away from your body. Never try to catch falling sharp instruments.
  14. Report any accident or injury to the instructor immediately – no matter how trivial it may appear.
  15. Never handle broken glass with your bare hands. Sweep it into the dust pan and dispose of it in the designated glass disposal container. Your teacher will clean up all broken glass.
  16. Hot glass looks like cold glass. When working with heat, treat all glass as though it were hot.
  17. Report damaged electrical equipment immediately. Do not use equipment with frayed cords, exposed wires or loose connections.
  18. When removing an electrical plug from its socket, grasp the plug, not the electrical cord. Hands must be completely dry before touching an electrical switch, plug or outlet.
  19. If you do not know how to use a piece of equipment, ask the instructor for help.
  20. Never leave a lit burner unattended. Always turn the burner off when not in use.
  21. Goggles must be worn when heating, grinding, chopping or cutting.
  22. Hair should be tied back and avoid loose clothing in the lab.
